Driving through Durban

Over the last few weeks spent most of the time driving through town. The more you have spare time on your hand the more you notice that all the road names have changed. Yes its great to see our freedom fighters get some recognition but for the people at the for front of our struggle against apartheid shouldn’t there be more done for us to realise our history as a nation and how far we’ve come as a country.

Along with the street names there should be more statues around the city and in different places. Also not the same usual statues like the likes of Mandela, Walter Sisulu or OR Tambo but let us have more statues of those that past on during the apartheid era. The people that were stole from us during apartheid by the government. Martyrs that were either tortured to death or blown to pieces in car bombings and so called accidents. These are people that also need to be remembered as they made the huge sacrifice to get our nation to where we are today. We are most diverse city in South Africa and probably in the World. With so many different cultures and races around the City. No place in Durban is dominated by one particular race unless it suffered from the group arrears act. This city is so beautiful with beach and all the peaceful farmlands that just add to the cities diverse culture. Every suburb you visit has its own unique story to it with its different background. This helps build a stronger communities to overcome its worst challenges. There are some things you experience in Durban that you can’t replace or even move away from. Even when you go holiday nothing quite feels the same as home and all the apartheid fighters who lived here add to these communities because that’s what brought us closer together when everyone came together to fight against one common cause. Now we need those statues to be built to remind us of who we are and what we mean to each other.
